WINDOW STUDIO brings the traditional practice of portrait painting into a street-level storefront to create a collaborative portrait of the residents of Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. By setting up my studio in a storefront window, passersby can see me at work and come in to commission paintings. The portraits, combined with a series of “pictures in words” documenting these interactions, serve to capture the experiences, aspirations, and tensions in this historically poor African-American working class neighborhood as it undergoes sharp economic and social changes.
